Raloxifene is a medication which reduces loss of bone tissue. It is prescribed for women in postmenopausal period to prevent or treat osteoporosis. The active chemical ingredient is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), which has similar action to estrogen in the female body. After numerous medical exams it appears that Raloxifene reduces the risk of breast cancer and uterine cancer. Your doctor might prescribe the medication to be taken with some other vitamin supplements that contain Vitamin D and Calcium.
Direction
Take Raloxifene exactly as directed by your doctor. The medication can be taken before or after your meals every day. If a dose is missed try to take it as soon as possible, but if it is almost time for the next one – skip the missed dose. It is preferable not to miss any doses. During the usage of the medication you might be recommended more exercises and to avoid sitting still for a long time of period. The consuming of alcohol and smoking are not preferable while you are on this medication. Some medication might affect the result of the medication (Cholestyrmine, Colestipol, Coumadin).You might not be able to take Raloxifene if you are taking medication on estrogen or progesterone bases such as birth controls. If you have a history of cancer, liver disease, stroke, blood clots you may not be recommended the usage of the medication. DO NOT take Raloxifene if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, the medication will harm or cause birth defects in the baby. You should contact your health care provider immediately if you notice any of the following side effects: sharp pain in the legs, chest pain, coughing up blood, vision changes. All of these side effects indicate blood clot formations in the body.
Side Effects
Some of the effects that might occur are less serious than others, and there is a possibility of allergic reaction. Normal side reactions are: leg cramps, soreness, hot flashes, sweating. If more serious side effects occur or you think you overdosed contact your physician or seek emergency medical attention.

Raloxifenes most common side effects are: Hot flashes, sweating, or leg cramps. Raloxifene may infrequently cause serious blood clots to form in the legs, lungs, or eyes. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: leg swelling/pain, trouble breathing, chest pain, vision changes.
